Your Dental Insurance
Insurance companies are in business to make money by providing payment for health care. Your Union, Company or Employer has purchased dental insurance coverage from a selection of plans offered by the insurance company or insurance broker. The extent of coverage is in direct proportion to the premium charged for the benefit package. The larger the premium, the more comprehensive the benefit. Two different plans may be administered by the same insurance company (Aetna, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, etc.) with very different payment benefits. This is very common and requires you, the insured, to be familiar with your plan. It is in the best interests of the Employer and the Insurance Company to appear to have total and complete coverage. This is often not the case. Most carriers cover only 50-80% of the costs of treatment.
Insurance companies also pay certain benefits for certain areas of the mouth. As an example, Tooth colored fillings are rarely paid for in the "back of the mouth" since they are not seen as a necessity in that area. Since only tooth colored fillings (Mercury free) are exclusively placed in our office the insurance company may provide an allowance for these fillings that only covers the portion that they would pay for Silver (50% Mercury ) Fillings. You will be responsible for the portion that the insurance company does not pay.
At times, your treatment may require procedures not covered by your negotiated insurance plan. Since our goal is to provide comprehensive care, we will not be dictated by the insurance carrier as to the treatment to provide to our patients. Our first and foremost concern is your health. These procedures are often not paid any benefit, because they are not listed in your insurance coverage.
Since the insurance coverage was purchased by you or your employer, any dispute will best be handled by your agents with the insurance company. We stand ready to provide any descriptive information to support the treatment provided, however, your input with the insurance company may result in a change of policy while our input has little effect, since we are not the purchaser of the coverage for your company! You also have the ability to influence the correct people to purchase a better plan for your future needs.
The patient is ultimately responsible for all fees incurred during treatment. Our obligation is to provide you with the best and most comprehensive dental care available. We can do so with your consultation but not with treatment dictated by third party insurance carriers. Where your health is concerned, there is no room for compromise.
We have had many years of experience dealing with dental insurance companies, and will be happy to help you receive the maximum benefit available by filling out your dental forms accurately. We will be happy to answer any questions that you may have, however, you need to become familiar with your policy so that we can do our best to help you get your benefits.
